International Friendship Association (IFA) LOGO: Bronner Family - Dad Scott & Mom Taeko started IFA & FIG
International Friendship Association seeks to welcome all internationals, whether recent immigrants, refugees, international students, migrant workers, travelers.... Being an international in American society can be exciting but also a bit lonely or confusing. How does one get to know an American family or friend? Friday International Gathering!
We started weekly Friday International Gatherings (FIGs) for just these purposes. It is a wonderful, enjoyable, interesting time in which internationals of all types and Americans mingle. We go from 6 to 9 PM and meet at our home: Scott (a teacher of ESL at HACC) and Taeko (a tutor of Japanese) Bronner. We live at 1544 Dunmore Drive; Lancaster, PA 17602 (please call or email below before coming so we can keep track of numbers).
From 6 to 6:30 is making/finding a nametag and talking with people as they come. Then at around 6:30 PM we start a potluck dinner. Please bring a dish if you can from your country or donate $3 for the food we make. If you don't have $3 because of hard times, don't worry - please come as our guest! Somehow there is always enough food.
After dinner some play games outside like soccer, volleyball and croquet, while others talk inside. If weather is poor, there's also ping pong downstairs and other games to play. Then around 8 to 8:30 PM we get together for small group discussions on topics like "the most interesting thing that happened to you" or "a childhood memory". It's like a big family sometimes, so people help in setting up or cleaning up or giving rides. We welcome you to our family's home!
For more information Telephone Scott or Taeko (pronounced Tyco) at Tel: 717-390-9089 (no solicitors/sales please)
Or email nationsfriends[at]gmail.com (please replace [at] with @ - we do this to stop auto-spammers)
*Volunteers for Friday International Gathering come from a variety of churches but will not talk about anything that will make you uncomfortable if folks let us know. If you have questions about Christianity, though, we are more than happy to answer. Mutual respect is key, and something we practice. As shown in our name, "Friendships" are what we want to build between various cultures.
